Design of turbo-generator rotors is complex:
- Numerous different materials, all with different mechanical and thermal properties
- In particular, the winding copper and insulation components are subject to severe mechanical and thermal stresses as individual components of the rotor undergo thermal differential expansion under a wide variety of demanding operating conditions
- If these components are not designed appropriately to interact as a “unit”, or are not suitable for the operating regime of the power plant, e.g. for machines operated in frequent start-stop mode, then the resulting wear can lead to operating faults: short-circuited coils, thermal unbalances, increased vibration, and unplanned downtime.
